In 2023, Noa Hermans (right in the photo), together with Pien Steenbeek, founded the Breda Beats Foundation: a ‘cultural incubator’ for young talent in the music and entertainment industry. With its own Talent Academy and involvement in various projects and events, Breda Beats is putting Breda’s electronic music scene on the map. Just look at the success of TURF (@turf.event, powered by Breda Beats) and you’ll know: they’re doing a pretty good job of it.

The mission of Breda Beats

TURF has become an integral part of Breda. The annual event brings the city to life. But it is more than just a festival. TURF is the fertile ground that brings together the different layers of the city: from talent to businesses, from thinkers to doers, from makers to admirers. TURF is more than an annual event. It is a platform in Breda that helps its residents flourish. Just as peat was once the fertile ground and driving force behind Breda, TURF is now taking on that role once again. We spoke to Noa, TURF’s creative director.

Commissioned by PopMonument 2022 (26 November 2022) and in collaboration with Graphic Matters, Breda illustrators created contemporary portraits inspired by Nassau women who lived in Breda between 1404 and 1620. While their husbands fought on the battlefield or governed the country elsewhere, these women influenced the development of our city and the country.

The illustrators drew inspiration from the lives of these strong women with distinctive personalities. They created portraits full of symbolism and contemporary interpretations of historical stories.

Meet the Nassau women and the illustrators, and view the new portraits.

Alongside the famous three crosses, Breda has another symbol: the eye tile from Breda Castle. Less well known than the crosses, but a symbol with a truly remarkable story. We talk about it with Dingeman Kuilman, director of Stedelijk Museum Breda. “What’s remarkable is that they are unique objects, and that there’s quite a mystery surrounding the eye tiles.”
