The mission of Breda Beats

  • ZigZag Culture
In 2023, Noa Hermans (right in the photo), together with Pien Steenbeek, founded the Breda Beats Foundation: a ‘cultural incubator’ for young talent in the music and entertainment industry. With its own Talent Academy and involvement in various projects and events, Breda Beats is putting Breda’s electronic music scene on the map. Just look at the success of TURF (@turf.event, powered by Breda Beats) and you’ll know: they’re doing a pretty good job of it.

Young talent gets all the tools they need here to make their musical dream a reality.

For music creators

Noa: “We’re here for the young music makers in Breda. For undiscovered, established and still-searching talent. Here at Breda Beats, they meet one another and get all the tools they need to develop themselves and make their musical dreams come true. Whether that’s as a producer, artist or manager. For example, we see a lot of DJs who are at the point of saying, ‘Okay, we know all about playing in the pub by now; I’m ready for the next step.’ They need to feel that they can take that step in Breda. Or, better still, that this is the place to grow. Because the industry is making its presence felt here.”

Learn, create, connect

“The next step looks different for everyone. From learning to produce to securing international bookings; it all depends on your ambition and what you need. Breda Beats offers coaching, workshops and studio space. And also: a place where you meet other musical creators. “To learn from each other and create together. That’s how we take the industry to the next level.”

When it comes to dance, Breda is pretty pleased with itself, but we do need to keep living up to that legacy.

For people who have to miss the party more often

One of the projects Breda Beats is involved in is the Music Moves training programme. "In this industry, it quickly becomes all about the glamour and glitz. DJing in Miami, hands in the air, earning lots of money... With Music Moves, we also look at the other side: the vulnerable groups who more often have to miss out on the party, for whatever reason. We train young people to organise events specifically for these groups."

TURF is Breda

But Breda Beats is more than a talent development programme. It is also about the city of Breda and how it presents itself. “Look, when it comes to dance, Breda is pretty pleased with itself. And rightly so. But we do need to keep living up to that legacy. With TURF, we’ve taken a great step in that direction. A whole weekend with all eyes on Breda as a melting pot of music, art and tech. That was absolutely brilliant. It was also great to feel the city’s willingness to get involved. Companies, students, creatives: everyone wanted to make this possible.”

"It’s amazing to realise how much you can do for the city when you work together. And the ambition is huge. TURF should become an annual, city-wide event. Just as Amsterdam has Amsterdam Dance Event and Eindhoven is associated with Dutch Design Week, we have TURF. TURF is Breda.”

Talent Academy ‘Pro’

The next Talent Academy starts in February/March and will be a ‘pro variant’. With a more extensive programme and more one-to-one guidance from a broader group of coaches. “It’s now even more about who you are as a participant, where you want to go and how we can support you along the way.”

You can apply for the Talent Academy if you’re from Breda, aged between 18 and 27 (“although we’re really not that strict, see it as a guideline”) and genuinely ambitious about pursuing a professional career in the music industry, in whatever role.
