Starterswinkels in Breda

    It is often small and special shops and hospitality that add extra color to a city centre. The Starterswinkel project in Breda creates a more diverse and surprising retail offering AND provides new entrepreneurs with support for two years.     Reiger en de Raaf

    Jelle and Florrie started Reiger en de Raaf in 2018 as a toy webshop. But not just any toys. Everything in their collection scores highly on the scale of beautiful, sustainable and educational. Moreover, it fits within pedagogical philosophies such as anthroposophy and the teachings of Maria Montessori. Thanks in part to Instagram, the webshop grew rapidly, and after a few years they took the leap to open a Starter Store on Halstraat in Breda. In the meantime, they have become 'starter store complete' and have relocated their shop to Van Goorstraat.

    Boutique Peridot

    For owner Geraldine, Peridot is a dream come true. Here she can fully express her passion for wool, crafts, and fragrances.  You can shop for handmade woolen items, including those from Geraldine's own sheep, or take a knitting workshop, for example.

    Mansour

    Hosang Safare is the founder of the brand Mansour. Designer clothing of the highest quality for a broad audience. The garments are responsibly produced in Portugal and Italy, using the best quality fabrics. Hosang's mission is to have his clothing cause as little impact on the planet as possible.

    Interior Bar

    Maaike started the Interior Bar to provide personal and creative interior advice. Sometimes just a few tips during an advice session, other times a plan for a completely new interior. Depending on your wishes, you can book an advice session of 1, 2, or 3 hours at the Interior Bar.

    Downtown Vintage

    Starting out as a pop-up vintage store, Downtown Vintage has since outgrown the label 'pop-up'. Here, you’ll find a wide range of vintage interior items and a mix of accessories from the mid-20th century. Each piece is unique.

    Stijn's Bakery

    Since childhood, Stijn has had a passion for baking, and how wonderful is it when you can open your own pastry shop at just twenty years old. Stijn creates his (wedding) cakes, pastries, and other treats with a lot of love and dedication. And it really shows!

    Momento Café

    Momento Café is a creative café in the city center. It's a cozy place to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee (also available to go). But Momento is more than that. It's the first paint-your-own-pottery café in Breda. Sign up for a workshop and get creative. In addition to painting ceramics, Momento also offers canvas painting and linen bag making.

    You may be familiar with this photo booth phenomenon from South Korea, where it is very popular. Step inside and take a series of funny photos to take home or share.  Open from the end of March.

    About the Starterswinkels project

    Starterswinkels is a project by the Municipality of Breda and the Breda Entrepreneurs Fund to give startup entrepreneurs a helping hand. But it benefits in more ways. Floor van Keijzerswaard, who has been the project manager of Starterswinkels since spring 2025, lists: "It lowers the barrier to opening a shop of your own, provides a more diverse range of offerings and improves the city centre, and it also helps to reduce vacancies."   

    Entrepreneurs can apply for a starter shop, but Floor also approaches webshop entrepreneurs whom she believes could successfully complement their online ventures with a physical store. 

    This is how it works

    You have an innovative, promising retail, horeca, or leisure concept and are ready to open your own store. Then submit your idea on the Starterswinkels website.  

    If your idea passes the selection committee, you will receive for two years:

    • substantial discount on your rent
    • assistance in finding a suitable property
    • information and advice regarding maintenance, waste disposal, security, etc.
    • access to the network of business coaches and trainers
    • your own company profile on all popular Breda platforms, including Explore Breda
    • access to the business community with all entrepreneurs in the city center

    After two years, you are expected to be able to stand on your own and hopefully your store will face a bright future!
