De Klokkenberg - Groene Camino location

On the banks of the De Mark River lies the De Klokkenberg estate. The buildings are listed as a national monument because they are an example of ‘reconstruction architecture’.

In the 1950s, these buildings served as a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. The contagious lung disease often had a fatal outcome at that time. The cleansing effect of the pine air from the Mastbos was believed to be healing. The disease eventually disappeared only through the invention of antibiotics. Later, various specialised clinics were established here, including a well-known heart clinic.

The original buildings have been incorporated into a newly developed residential area in recent years. The clock tower still reminds visitors of the illustrious medical history.

Groene Camino
This location is part of the Groene Camino, a nature and cultural-historical walk through Breda. The walk is 26 km long and runs from the Heilige Eik in Den Hout through the centre of Breda to the Sint Jacobskapel in Galder.
