Nature inspires Bouwmeester. She delves into how landscapes form and change, and into the way plants and animals develop. This fascination is visible in her work: organic shapes that seem to twist, swell, or contract.

In preparation for her sculptures, Iris Bouwmeester photographs many plants, flowers, and other organisms. She looks for images that are not immediately recognizable. For example, by zooming in or out, a swamp suddenly turns into a starry sky.
