About Enfin, Barbin
Enfin, Barbin. is a theatrical bedroom concert where Marleen plays all the characters: Herculine Barbin, the men who wrote about her, and Marleen Hendrickx herself.
The starting point is the book about 19th-century Herculine Barbin, which contains the only surviving account of an intersex person's experience in Western Europe. In her memoirs, Barbin describes how she was legally declared a man after a hidden relationship with a woman.
Over a century later, the philosopher Michel Foucault published her memoirs alongside Barbins' medical reports, a romanticised version of the German psychiatrist Oskar Panizza, and Foucault's own reflection. In this form, the book gained some notoriety, leading three men to ruthlessly silence Herculine Barbin.
With music, dance, live video, and a voice transformer, Marleen Hendrickx restores the power to its rightful owner. Alternating between caricatured characters and her own personality, Marleen gives Herculine the queer joy she found herself after coming out as intersex.
