Information

Welcome and step inside the 18th-century reception room of Breda. Here, east meets west in the interior: from French panelling to Chinese wallpaper.

In the 18th century, it was a trend to have objects from Asia in one’s home. Various goods from the ‘Far East’ arrived in the Netherlands via the trade routes of the VOC (Dutch East India Company). Wallpaper that was made to order exclusively also found its way to Ginnekenstraat in Breda.

There lived the enterprising and prosperous couple Cantzlaar - Kamerling. They adorned their reception room with wall-to-wall wallpaper featuring intimate Cantonese representations. Together with the Louis XVI framing, a fusion of styles was created.

Step inside and discover the story behind this unique wallpaper and the remarkable buyers of Chinese wallpaper – Grandeur in Ginnekenstraat.
