Program Week of Accessibility Breda

  • Accessible
  • Accessibility
The annual Accessibility Week is this year from 6th to 12th October. The aim of this themed week is to raise awareness about the importance of accessibility for people with disabilities. We also want to show that everyone wants and can participate.

Breda Gelijk and the Platform Breda Voor Iedereen have put together a special program for people with disabilities in Breda. Below is an overview of the activities. By using the buttons, you can find information and register for the activities that are open to the public.

Breda Canal Run

On the first Sunday of October and on the eve of Accessibility Week, the annual Singelloop takes place.
It has a nice connection with Accessibility Week through the Walking & Wheeling segment. This activity is intended for walkers but also for wheelchair users.

The 5 km route partly follows the Singelloop course and of course ends at the Grote Markt.

Tour of Breda Castle for visually impaired and blind people

A guide from Guild of the Barony gives a tour of the grounds of the Castle of Breda. The tour is fully tailored to participants with a visual impairment.
A specially designed relief map for this tour ensures that the terrain can also be 'felt' and participants can form a good impression of the surroundings.

At Curio by experienced professionals

On Tuesday 7 October, experiential experts from Breda Gelijk will give a lesson to students enrolled in the Social Care Worker course at Curio.  They will share what life with a disability looks like for them. What challenges do they face, and what do they need to be fully involved in society? They will tell the students that despite their disabilities, they lead meaningful and enjoyable lives.

In three sessions of fifteen minutes each, there will be talks about hearing impairment and visual impairment, as well as life in a wheelchair. There is also a session concerning young informal carers — children growing up in a family with someone who needs extra care or support due to a disability, addiction, or a chronic illness.

Through this information, students gain insight into the lives of people they may work with professionally.

Hundreds of children from both mainstream and special education will participate on Friday 10 October in the Special KIDS-day, the largest inclusive sports event for young people.

Well-known athletes will accompany the children on that day at the new facilities of Atletiekvereniging Sprint. The children will be offered more than twenty sports in total.
