Pip welcomes you to Breda

For her Leisure & Events course at De Rooi Pannen, 19-year-old Pip spent half a year living in Breda. She now lives back in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, but the city still holds a special place in her heart. From cosy pubs to festivals and spontaneous encounters: according to Pip, Breda is the place where you quickly feel at home.

A city where everyone is welcome

"What surprised me most about Breda is how convivial it is here. If you ask someone for something, you’re often just welcome to join in. People are very open, and you quickly feel at home." According to Pip, that is exactly what makes Breda so special. While she sometimes notices in larger cities that people tend to be more inward-looking, she experiences the opposite in Breda. "You speak to someone much more quickly here. Everyone is approachable, and because of that, you soon feel at ease."

Studying among the greenery

If Pip has to choose a favourite study spot, she doesn't have to think long about it. "De Nieuwe Veste is really a lovely place to study. I especially enjoy the garden when the weather is nice. And otherwise, studying at someone's home is always gezellig," she says with a laugh. Lost your focus for a moment? According to her, there's plenty of variety to recharge in between.

From pub to skatepark

During her student days, De Suikerkist was a regular spot to meet friends. "That was really like our local pub. But I also find Het Hart very cosy. When you go there, you must order the nachos!”

Additionally, Pip likes to visit Pier15 and Dok19. "There’s always such a relaxed atmosphere. There’s usually something going on and it’s just lovely.”

Breda is bursting with festivals

Those who only know Breda from the cafés, according to Pip, miss an important part of the city. namely the many events. "I really recommend the Jazz Festival. Then the entire city centre comes alive. You go from tent to tent, there’s music everywhere and a great atmosphere everywhere." It is precisely this combination of culture, music, and conviviality that makes Breda so unique, in her view.

For students who are just starting out in Breda, Pip has a few tips ready:

1. Approach people.
“Everyone is very friendly and before you know it, you'll have made new friends.”

2. Try as many things as possible.
“Go to a salsa workshop, visit an open day, or join an activity. Breda has so many accessible activities to participate in.”

3. Seize opportunities outside your studies.
“During your internship or part-time job, you meet a lot of people. That has ultimately brought me the most benefit.”
