Between the station and Park Valkenberg, 800 red ants are crawling across the pedestrian section of Willemstraat. The creator, artist Florentijn Hofman, made six different tiles which make the ants appear to walk in different directions. The insects symbolise the crowds of people who walk back and forth between the station and the city centre every day.
Hofman has become known for his extremely large and playful artworks like the 'Rubber Duck'. This giant, yellow rubber duck has floated around in Amsterdam, Osaka, Beijing, and Sydney.Beeldschoon Breda added a 'digital layer' to the ants. When you scan the QR code located at the beginning of Willemstraat (on both sides) to the right of the street, the ants come to life. They grow larger and appear to walk in all directions.
