Trappist Brewery De Kievit

Trappist Brewery de Kievit has had the official label 'Authentic Trappist Product' from the International Trappist Association since 2024. The abbey has a modern brewery where two monks brew Zundert Trappist together with an external brew master. The brewery is traditionally set up with a brewing kettle, clarification tank, and boiling kettle.

Abbey Maria Toevlucht is one of the nine brewing Trappist abbeys in the world. The beers from these breweries are allowed to carry the label ‘Authentic Trappist Product’. Trappist beer is brewed within the walls of the abbey by or under the supervision of the monks. Trappist brewery De Kievit has a limited production.

The beer from Trappist brewery De Kievit is only available at the abbey itself.

Since April 2024, the refectory beer from Trappist brewery De Kievit carries the official certification ‘Authentic Trappist Product’ from the International Trappist Association. The beer was developed at the request of the abbot to be served in the refectory (dining hall) of the abbey and the guesthouse. Zundert 4 Refterbier has no national distribution. To emphasise this, the label has a different appearance from the other beers: Zundert 8 Tripel Trappist and Zundert 10 Quadrupel Trappist.

Zundert 4 Refterbier is a light beer, with only 4% alcohol. Of course, it is a true Zundert Trappist, so it has a spicy element. For this beer, the brewery uses rye as one of the brewing grains. This adds a spicy touch, which is enhanced by the addition of a very small amount of bog myrtle, which grows in the vicinity of the abbey. Although the beer is light, it certainly has character.
