The Lighthouse

Why is there a lighthouse here? Purely for decoration, because the time when seafaring ships came to Breda is long gone.

'The Lighthouse' was conceived by Italian artist/architect Aldo Rossi. A modern eye-catcher on the edge of the historic city centre. Breda appreciates contrasts.

When he exhibited at the Beyerd in Breda in the 1980s (the location now housing the Stedelijk Museum Breda), the idea of an artwork by Rossi in Breda was born. Rossi had previously exhibited lighthouses in Toronto and Rotterdam, and in 1992, The Lighthouse was installed in Breda. Initially in the Wilhelminavijver, but after protests from local residents, the artwork found its permanent home on Academiesingel.

Rossi was not the first Italian artist to work for Breda. Hendrik III of Nassau and his wife Mencia de Mendoza brought Tommaso Vincidor to Breda. Over five centuries ago, he transformed the Castle of Breda into a splendid Renaissance palace. A first in Northern Europe.
