Sinte Juttemis
Sinte Juttemis refers to the period when the church had forbidden carnival in Breda. According to the bishop, the celebration was allowed to take place "with Sinte Juttemis" again. So, never.
Sinte Juttemis refers to the period when Breda was 'carnival-free'. Although originally a Catholic festival, the church banned carnival in the early 1900s because it was deemed too dissolute. When the people of Breda asked the bishop when they could celebrate carnival again, the reply was always “with Sinte Juttemis”, or in other words, “never.” That ‘never’ lasted until 1936. At the 55th anniversary of the Breda carnival in 1991, Breda received the statue of Sinte Juttemis in Ridderstraat, created by Aimé Tollenaar.
