Oude Tuchthuis Breda

A historic corner building that recalls the strict penitentiary history of 18th-century Breda.

The former Tuchthuis on Halstraat in Breda is a striking national monument that holds an important place in the history of the Dutch prison system. On the night of 7 to 8 April 1774, the original building was completely destroyed by fire, in which seven female prisoners lost their lives. Shortly afterwards, a decision was made to rebuild it. The new design was created by bricklayer Augustinus Canters, in collaboration with city architect Philip Willem Schonck. Construction started in 1775 and was completed in 1777.

The Tuchthuis is built with yellow brick and has a strict, functional appearance that matches its original purpose. The small windows with heavy bars and the elevated central section with a pediment on the side facing Oude Vest give the building its recognisable character. At the same time, the director’s house on Halstraat was also realised.

In 1886, the building ceased to serve as a prison and was repurposed as an armory by the army. This changed its use, but the building remained a distinctive part of the historic city centre.

Today, various enterprises are located in the Tuchthuis, such as a hairdresser and a hospitality area.
