Huize Mertersem

In this villa in the Princenhage district lived Vincent van Gogh's uncle Vincent. He was an art dealer and gallery owner.

Uncle Cent, as the painter called him, started as a fifteen-year-old assistant in a paint shop, but grew to become an important art dealer. Eventually, he became a co-owner of Goupil in Paris. He traveled the world searching for talent.

Also Vincent and his brother Theo were guided onto the path of art by uncle Cent. Vincent received his first painting box from his godfather, who also introduced him to painter and teacher Anton Mauve. After some disagreements, uncle Cent distanced himself from Vincent, and when Vincent announced that he would be moving in with prostitute Sien in The Hague, the break with his uncle was final.

As a child, Vincent often visited his uncle Cent and aunt Cornelia, who had no children of their own. Both are buried, like Vincent's grandparents, at Begraafpark Zuylen in Breda. The building they lived in, Huize Mertersem, still exists. Today, it is used as an office.
