House "Prins Maurits

A notable national heritage site on the Grote Markt that reveals the early 17th-century history of Breda.

House Prins Maurits at Grote Markt 61 in Breda is a national monument built around 1612. The building is a fine example of early 17th-century urban architecture and stands out mainly due to its characteristic stepped gable, a style that was common in prosperous cities during that period.

Notable elements include the diagonal top pilaster supported by a carved lion's head, the scallop shell motif in the archivolt above one of the windows, and the decorative scroll anchors. These details reflect the Renaissance influences that were visible in the Netherlands at the time.

In 1932, the building was restored by architect Fr. Mol, which preserved many of its original features. Today, House Prins Maurits forms a distinctive part of the historic façade along Grote Markt and contributes to the monumental character of Breda's city centre.

Nowadays, there is hospitality in House Prins Maurits, as you can enjoy a beer at 't Tapperijke.
