De Turfschipper
Turf shipper Adriaan van Bergen entered the grounds of Breda Castle on 4 March 1590. Instead of transporting turf, he carried soldiers of Prince Maurits who conquered the castle from the Spaniards that time. The statue was made by Grada Rueb.
Turfschipper Adriaan van Bergen entered the grounds of Breda Castle on 4 March 1590, as he often did, with his peat ship. It was during the Eighty Years' War and Breda, and thus the Castle, were in Spanish hands. Instead of peat, Adriaan transported soldiers of Prince Maurits this time. They surprised the Italian mercenaries and retook the castle from the Spanish. However, this did not mean the end of the war, as the Spanish recaptured Breda later on.
Originally, De Turfschipper was a terracotta figurine made by Grada Rueb in 1926. After it was destroyed in 2004, a bronze version was made to replace it.
