De Drie Moren

Discover the story behind one of Breda’s oldest buildings: Huis De Drie Moren.

House De Drie Moren on Visserstraat in Breda is one of the oldest and best-preserved historic buildings in the city. At this location, there was already a stone house before the great city fire of 1490. That original building was lost during the fire, but the stone side walls could be reused during reconstruction. The building thus shows that even stone houses in the Middle Ages were vulnerable, although the damage was less severe than in wooden houses.

The name De Drie Moren refers to the medieval term for Africans. Between 1626 and 1702, a inn was housed in the building, giving it an important social function in the city centre. It is also one of the few buildings in Breda whose fifteenth- and sixteenth-century structure is still clearly visible.

The house is nowadays a national monument and was restored thanks to the efforts of Stichting De Drie Moren. The current occupant is an artist known in Breda for, among other things, the Hoge Brug over the Haven and the glass roof lantern on the Kloosterkazerne.
