Catharinastraat
Just like in Nieuwstraat and Sint Janstraat, you will find several courtyard houses in Catharinastraat. You will also find entrances to Park Valkenberg, the Beguinage, and The Willem Merkxtuin.
Just like in Nieuwstraat and Sint Janstraat, you will find several courtyard houses in Catharinastraat. Opposite the Walloon Church, at No. 20, delegates from the States of Holland, Zeeland and West Freisland stayed. In 1667, they attended the negotiations for the Peace of Breda, at Breda Castle. When the Peace of Breda was concluded, a big party was held in the city and fountains were set up in front of this house, from which wine spouted.
At the end of Catharinastraat (towards Boschstraat) used to be the guesthouse gate, one of the three city gates built at the walling of Breda around 1330. The gate took its name from the guesthouse on Boschstraat, which today houses Stedelijk Museum Breda.
