By moorlands are understood solely natural bodies of water. Certainly, in the past, bogs were mostly found on heathland areas.

Before 1960, most heathlands were cultivated, resulting in the disappearance of many ponds. When heath was cultivated into woodland, the ponds often remained intact. Most have vanished in agricultural areas. In a large part of the ponds, peat growth has occurred.
