Summer Break at Stedelijk Museum Breda
Dierenstad: 6 July to 1 September
It's going to be a cosy animal party at the museum during the summer holiday! In the past, the lord of Breda determined what would happen to the city. Today, this is in the hands of the municipal council and the residents, but what would Breda look like if the animals were in charge?

With this ticket, you can also visit the museum after the workshop. Workshop access only with valid tickets (max 30 people per workshop).

Djenné Fila's colourful illustrations (Tilburg 1995) take you on a journey into a fantasy world full of construction fun and roaring. Her fairytale-like work brings stories to life for young and old. Get inspired, get creative, and help us build our growing Animal City!

Theatrical exhibition 19th July to 11th September - Free
This summer, the Chassé Theatre, in collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum Breda, will present the theatrical exhibition De Held, de Schurk en de Waarheid by Folkert de Jong from 19 July to 11 September. The Chassé Theatre is located a five-minute walk from the museum. The exhibition is free to visit.
Chassé Theatre
Queen Wilhelmina as a circus director and Jesus and Mary in reverse roles. They come to life in The Hero, the Villain and the Truth. The exhibition consists of life-sized styrofoam sculptures by the artist Folkert de Jong. With twisted versions of famous figures like Luther, Jesus and Mary, Queen Wilhelmina, Zeeuws Meisje, and Snoop Dogg, he presents his own vision of history. The sculptures come to life with provocative audio stories and theatrical lighting. Renowned authors such as Abdelkader Benali, Elfie Tromp, Roziena Salihu, and Maxine Palit de Jongh have written the stories. The exhibition is presented in the room and on the stage of the Royal Printer Em. de Jongzaal.
Stedelijk Museum Breda
At the Stedelijk Museum Breda, during the exhibition The Hero, the Villain and the Truth, 'Dutch Mechanisms, Willem van Oranje' can be seen in the freely accessible hall. In this work, De Jong shows the Father of the Fatherland in his grave, wearing headphones and listening to the news.
Folkert de Jong
Folkert de Jong (1972) is considered one of the most important Dutch artists. He is acclaimed for his virtuosity as a sculptor and the brilliant expression of human madness. In The Hero, the Villain and the Truth, De Jong plays with history: he reverses roles, brings contemporary issues into the past, and gives historical events a different course.
The Hero, the Villain and the Truth is an initiative by curator Johan Idema, in collaboration with Folkert de Jong and exhibition makers Brandwacht & Meijer. Made possible by Mondriaan Fund, Fonds 21, Chassé Cultuurfonds, BNG Cultuurfonds, Stichting SEC, Zabawas, Cultuurfonds Noord-Brabant, Stichting Stokroos, De Gijselaar-Hintzenfonds, and Stichting Gifted Art.
Lecture 9th of July - Femke Deen: Mothers of the Nation
The Friends of Stedelijk Museum Breda, together with De Gouden Cirkel, are organising a lecture by historian Femke Deen at the Waalse Kerk. In light of her new book 'Moeders des Vaderlands', she will talk about strong women in our history. The lecture is exclusive to Friends of Stedelijk Museum Breda and members of De Gouden Cirkel.
Educational - Meet Club Zien
Together with four other museums in Brabant, Stedelijk Museum Breda has joined forces to allow students from pre-vocational education (vmbo) to discover and experience their museums. With Club Zien, students look at art, heritage, and design with a fresh perspective. The offering has been developed in co-creation with and tailored to vmbo students and their interests and worldviews. First, we celebrate summer and then the new school year with Club Zien!
