Stumbling Stones Lecture

Discover more about stumbling stones, also known as Stolpersteine, during a lecture at the General Maczek Memorial in Breda.

Information

Walking through Breda and other Dutch and European cities, you can almost "stumble" over copper-colored stones in the pavement. In Europe, more than 122,000 so-called "Stolpersteine" have been placed since 1992, and it is an art project by the German artist Gunter Demnig (1947 Berlin).

Each stone is placed in front of the house – the last residence – of people who were displaced, deported, murdered, or driven to suicide during the Second World War. In this way, this stone becomes a permanent monument to pause and reflects the importance of remembrance.
