Pussy Riot in Mezz

Experience the powerful performance Riot Days by Pussy Riot in Breda! Music, theatre, and activism come together in a bold mix.

Information

Pussy Riot does not hold back when it comes to social issues: war, LGBTQ rights, feminism, or the Russian regime. The punk collective is unafraid to make critical statements with a combination of solid punk, activism, and a touch of theatre. Pussy Riot addresses sensitive topics, such as the situation of women in Russia and President Putin's election campaign. On 17 August 2012, the three members were sentenced to two years in prison. With their performance Riot Days, the Russian feminist protest collective has created a groundbreaking show filled with live music, theatre, and multimedia.

The show is based on Maria “Masha” Alyokhina’s acclaimed book Riot Days, which exuberantly describes the iconic protests, trials, and prison sentences of the collective. It portrays the political persecutions and current events such as Russian aggression against Ukraine. The show has been performed over 400 times, with more than €200,000 of the proceeds donated to a children's hospital in Ukraine and political prisoners in Russia. The performance was staged in unique locations, including just a stone's throw from the site of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and now this striking show comes to Breda with a bold revamped version!

The version delves into Maria’s personal journey following her release from the Russian prison in 2022: - Pussy Riot’s protests, including the clash with Cossacks during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi - Attacks by pro-Kremlin groups - The heroic story of Alexei Navalny, his arrest, imprisonment, and murder in prison - Maria’s multiple arrests - Putin’s invasion of Ukraine The performance is a mix of music, theatre, and film and features four actors: Maria Alyokhina, Kyril Masheka, Nastya, and Max. The show is produced by Alexander Cheparukhin and directed by Yury Muravitsky. In short, it’s a political story with hard-hitting statements!
