Special screening during the Cinema 10-day at Filmhuis Botanique Breda: a preview of the Silver Bear-winning The Blue Trail. Seventy-seven-year-old Tereza, born and raised in an industrial town on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, is suddenly ordered to leave her home. The state forces her to move to a so-called ‘senior colony,’ a place where elderly are expected to spend their final years ‘enjoying’ so that the younger generation can focus completely on growth and productivity. But Tereza refuses to accept this inhumane measure. Instead of surrendering her freedom, she embarks on a clandestine boat journey through the Amazon. What follows is a voyage through lush landscapes filled with obstacles, unexpected encounters, and a growing realisation that freedom knows no age. The Blue Trail is a rebellious road movie by Gabriel Mascaro (Neon Bull) about aging, resistance, and the right to keep dreaming. The Brazilian film combines social urgency with a atmospheric visual storytelling style and shows that aging can have a very different face. The Blue Trail won this year’s Silver Bear (Grand Jury Prize) at Berlinale and received international acclaim.
