Information

Phaedra, Queen of Athens, is trapped in an unhappy marriage with her husband Theseus. Everything changes when she meets her prospective daughter-in-law Persea. This young woman upsets everything and everyone around her, recklessly challenging the existing power structures. Phaedra becomes enchanted by Persea’s fierce strength. A secret, passionate relationship develops, with disastrous consequences.

Director Ola Mafaalani made her name with raw, visual, and poetic productions such as Othello, Heaven Above Berlin, and Fellini. Until 2016, she led Noord Nederlands Toneel. Afterwards, she mainly created her major productions for opera and abroad. For the first time since the theatre hit Borgen (2016), she is now back on the larger stage.

Composer Krists Auznieks composed new music, performed live by four musicians (violin, cello, harp, and viola) from the New European Ensemble. The ensemble was founded in 2009 in the Netherlands by dedicated and passionate musicians from across Europe. NEuE has built a reputation for imaginative programming and is considered one of the ‘leading ensembles of the Netherlands’ (Nieuwe Noten).
