Nature walk Duiventoren IVN

On Saturday 20 December, the nature guides of IVN Mark & Donge will explore through forests and sand dunes.

Information

The Duiventoren is primarily a woodland area. A part of it is known as the Moerken, a name that recalls the times when peat was collected here. The soil in some parts is marshy and fen-like, with pools and water features scattered throughout the area. Additionally, there are sand dunes that were planted at the beginning of the 20th century by Staatsbosbeheer to stabilise the sand. In the northeastern corner, there are still moving sands, known as the Woeste Zee.

The vegetation of the Duiventoren consists mainly of conifers and American oaks. There are also plots with mixed vegetation and a beech forest. Management aims to create a more natural forest with open spaces and more native deciduous trees, through thinning in coniferous woodland and American oak. The results of this management are already clearly visible in various locations.

After the walk, there is an opportunity to visit Toon Thielen's garden. Here, visitors can enjoy his beautiful courtyard garden, as well as pea soup and hot drinks. The IVN stall offers additional information for those wishing to learn more about nature. Staff from the hedgehog rescue also share insights into the protection of these vulnerable animals.

Registration is possible up to the day of the walk. After registering, information about the meeting point will be provided. The walk starts at 13:30 and lasts until around 15:30. More information and the registration form can be found on the IVN Mark & Donge website under Activities.
