Natural Daughter (Natural Daughter) at Gallery Ecker – BredaPhoto

In Filha Natural, Aline Motta searches for her great-great-grandmother Francisca, an enslaved woman who lived on a coffee plantation in Vassouras, Brazil. Through archival documents, stories and encounters, Motta attempts to piece together fragments of the past and restore family, community and land connections. The film raises questions about the legacy of slavery and which structures and ways of thinking from that legacy still persist today. At the same time, Filha Natural celebrates the survival of ancestral cultures through blood ties and community, language and song.
