Nassau Lecture Femke Deen: The Nassau Women of Breda

Femke Deen discusses the undervalued role of women in the Breda Nassau dynasty.

Information

In this lecture, we explore the world of powerful countesses, princesses, and nuns of the House of Nassau in Breda. These Nassau women from Breda were indispensable to the dynasty's survival. They participated in governance, exerted political influence, and enhanced the status of the dynasty through art, culture, and religion.

Where did these women find their inspiration? How did they make their voices heard? And how is it that we knew so little about them for so long?

Femke Deen, known from the book she wrote in 2018 about Anna of Saxony, the second wife of William of Orange, restores these women to their rightful place in history.
