My Brother + Debrief - Chassé Cinema

Watch this personal film by filmmaker Koert Davidse.

Information

About the filmmaker
When Bart, the 28-year-old brother of filmmaker Koert Davidse, died in 1986, there was no talk of the mysterious illness he succumbed to: AIDS. In their Zeeland family, where a culture of silence prevailed, there was also no discussion about Barts coming out.

About the film
In his most personal film to date, Davidse explores, forty years later, the free-spirited life of his elder brother. Once, their relationship was symbiotic, but Barts move to Amsterdam and the Academy of Fine Arts created distance. Just as they were reconnecting, Bart passed away. A traumatic event that profoundly affected Koert's life.

Despite the personal story of the Rotterdam-based filmmaker and producer Koert Davidse (You Shall Not Kill, Train Hijacking De Punt), this film also addresses larger themes, such as societal developments in the 1980s. What was the impact of HIV on those infected, friends, family members, and the medical community?

Meanwhile, Davidse observes that the freedoms gained by the LHBTQIA+ community are by no means always taken for granted, especially in an era of increasing restrictions. This screening is specially organised on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Transphobia, and Intersectional Phobias.

After the screening, there will be a discussion with director Koert Davidse and Jan van Velthoven, who was chairman of Stichting Aidscare from 2005 to 2010, of which the Buddyproject NO Brabant is a part. The conversation will be moderated by social designer and queer creator Sky Maike Juffermans.
