Mon Repos in Stedelijk Museum Breda

A couple, a camera, and an exceptional eye for detail. In Mon Repos, you get an intimate glimpse into the life of the entrepreneurial Klep family through cinematic family portraits.

Information

Between 1905 and 1915, the couple made hundreds of glass negatives: of stately Baronielaan, country estate Mon Repos, and the nearby Mastbos. Admire the power of their photography and feel for a moment like part of the family.

Camera & direction
The couple Arthur Klep and Willy Klep-van den Biesen create many special images. They think about lighting, styling, composition, and staging. As a result, their photos are strikingly natural and cinematic. Even children and animals were captured exactly at the right moment. Today, you can take a photo effortlessly, but at the beginning of the 20th century, it was different. It took a lot of time to make, develop, and print them.

The photos by Arthur and Willy are carefully planned and made with great patience.

Photography & development

Technological developments and increasing prosperity made photography a hobby. Around 1890, the first hand camera from Kodak hit the market. It became easier to take photos inside and outside the house, and the device could be taken along during holidays and trips. A photographic laboratory develops the glass negatives and makes prints.
