Liberation Day: The Girl with the Red Hair (1981, 4K Restoration) - Chassé Cinema
Information
Resistance fighter Hannie Schaft joined a group that carried out attacks on collaborators.
Especially for Chassé, the film is introduced with a video message from director Ben Verbong. Ben Verbong based his story on that of the young Haarlem student Hannie Schaft. During World War II, she paused her law studies to put her ideals and sense of justice into practice and joined the resistance. Hannie Schaft was arrested and executed a month before liberation.
About The Girl with the Red Hair
The Girl with the Red Hair is one of the most well-known titles in the Dutch war film genre, alongside Soldaat van Oranje (1977, Paul Verhoeven) and De aanslag (1986, Fons Rademakers). The debut of Verbong and Soutendijk's portrayal of Hannie Schaft was awarded the Dutch Film Critics Prize and was part of the Golden Bear competition at the Berlin International Film Festival.
The digital restoration was carried out by STORM (Jack Kuipers) under the supervision of Theo van de Sande, the film's cinematographer. He used a 4K scan of the original camera negative from the Eye collection as a starting point. After an extensive search, Ben Verbong rediscovered the original, supposedly lost negative in 2025. It was then transferred to Eye and scanned in 4K for the restoration.
