Lecture: The liberal fight for women's suffrage

A lecture on the history of women's suffrage and the role played by liberal thinkers in it.

Information

The fight for women's suffrage is often associated with feminism, but at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, liberal thinkers also had a significant influence. During this lecture, Patrick van Schie will explain how liberals contributed to women's rights, such as voting rights, changes in labor and marriage laws, and later the debate around abortion. Developments in the Netherlands will be compared with those in other countries.

Patrick van Schie is vice-chairman of EIOCO and scientific director of the Telders Foundation. He is co-author of The Liberal Struggle for Women's Suffrage.
