Lecture Philosophy of Memory
Information
This lecture consists of 3 workshops spread over 3 weeks. During each of the three workshops, the material is approached in a different way by Eric van Waalwijk van Doorn:
1. Lecture on Memory (4 March)
During the first workshop, Eric gives a lecture on memory. He begins with the Storage, Retention, and Retrieval of information in your memory. Then, Eric discusses different types of memory, mainly short-term and long-term memory. Afterwards, some philosophers on memory are brought into the conversation, such as Plato (knowledge = memory), Montaigne (a slow memory is an advantage), John Locke (memory determines your identity), and others.
During the lecture, you will look at memory disorders and special forms of memory. You see how memory is the invisible force that shapes our future. Metaphors for memory are also discussed, such as the Memory Palace and the Internet. The way in which we have outsourced our memory through history to clay tablets, paper, photography, Google, and AI is also covered. Eric concludes the lecture with the German philosopher Manfred Spitzer, who warns against ‘Digital Dementia’.
2. Workshop on Memory (11 March)
For the second workshop, you are asked to think at home about 5 philosophical questions regarding Memory and to come up with reasoned answers to them. These will then be discussed amongst the participants during the workshop. Your own life experience serves as your philosophical capital.
3. Book Discussion (18 March)
For the third workshop, you are asked to read pages 6 to 41 of the reader: Douwe Draaisma, De Heimweefabriek. Memory, Time & Old Age. Then, you will discuss the book together with the other participants.
