The Stadssociëteit De Gouden Cirkel is organising an evening on this theme at De Avenue. Martin Bossenbroek, author of Colonialism! The Curse of the Past, and Wim Klinkert, emeritus professor at the KMA, illuminated the theme from two angles. Bossenbroek sees, on one hand, pride in the past, and on the other, apologies for the history of slavery. How to deal with this dilemma? Wim Klinkert focuses on Breda. The most striking aspect is the connection between the KNIL (Royal Netherlands East Indies Army) and the city. From 1836 to 1940, the KMA also trained KNIL officers. And the diversity of relationships between Breda and the Dutch colonial past. To this day, our city has countless traces of this diversity of relationships, from buildings and monuments to the inhabitants of the city itself.
