Kantjil and the tiger (8+) | Chassé Theater

An grandmother with a final wish. Her brave granddaughter Indra. And the clever dwarf Kantjil, small in stature but big in courage. Together they embark on a journey to the past: a story that is as captivating as it is fragile, full of suspense, recognition, and a hearty dose of Indonesian humour.

Kantjil is a production by the Toneelmakerij, Oorkaan, and Studio Figur.
Indra’s grandmother Billy is ill. In her small sitting room, the family waits to say their goodbyes. But then it turns out that grandma has one last wish, a wish that changes everything. Indra decides to help her and unexpectedly finds herself in the middle of a hidden family history.

Along the way, she meets Kantjil, a magical Javanese dwarf with a black band. Together, they piece together the puzzle of the past. Can you be too old to still find a place for the past? Or too young to understand your own family's history?

How did this production come about?
Every year, the Toneelmakerij collaborates with another (music) theatre company to create a large family production. Following previous successes like Giselle, 1000+1 nights, As You Like It, Hans and Griet, and The Magic Flute, this autumn they team up with the Oorkaan Ensemble and five top actors. The result is a captivating musical theatre production about a hidden Indonesian family history, suitable for everyone aged eight and above.
