After a successful year in which he starred as Jesus Christ Superstar, Jeangu will release a brand new album this autumn, titled Young, Awkward & Lonely.
In the eponymous theatre concert, he sings about the awkwardness of life and searches for connection.
The show begins intimate and gradually builds up to a large ensemble, supported by his regular band and three singers from Zo! Gospel Choir, the most awarded gospel choir in the Netherlands. The songs performed will combine personal reflections on life with social themes such as queerness and colonialism.
Jeangu Macrooy’s musical journey started when he received his first guitar at the age of thirteen and began writing songs.
In 2014, he moved from Suriname to the Netherlands, where he broke through in 2017 with his debut album High On You, produced by Perquisite. He quickly became an established name in the Dutch music scene with performances at festivals like Lowlands and North Sea Jazz, participation in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2021, and multiple Edison Pop nominations. His third studio album Summer Moon (2022) combined the soulful sound of his debut with electronic and disco influences. In 2024, Jeangu Macrooy starred in the theatre spectacle Jesus Christ Superstar under the direction of Ivo van Hove. His portrayal of Jesus was praised by both audiences and critics, showcasing his artistic versatility.
