IVN Urban Plant Walk Belcrum, Breda

Discover on June 21 how rich nature is in the Belcrum district of Breda during a walk with IVN Mark & Donge. From hidden urban plants to surprising history, right in the heart of the city.

Information

On Sunday 21 June, IVN Mark & Donge will take you on a green discovery walk through Breda's most surprising neighborhood when it comes to plant species.

What is now a lively city district once had a rich history. It was once called the Belcrumberghe and later the Belcrumpolder, and in the early 17th century, it even hosted the Belcrumbos. Prince Maurice had a hunting lodge built there: the Speelhuis. Sitting on a hill full of rabbits, which later was no coincidence called the Konijnenberg.

In 1918, the municipality of Breda bought a large part of the polder for industry, commerce, and housing. The industry has partly disappeared, but creative businesses have given the area new life. And right in between lies something special: the greatest variety of plant species in the city.

During the walk, you'll discover how rich nature is here, amidst the buildings. Old walls host wall fern and wall loosestrife. In narrow firebreaks, sea thrift and yellow horned poppy bloom. And with a bit of luck, you'll also encounter the Moses-in-the-reeds basket, an American native one-day flower that surprisingly feels very much at home on the Breda pavement. Even small lovegras feels perfectly at home here.

Around the old location of the Speelhuis, you will find, among other things, bedroom happiness and tripmadam. In short: a city walk where you learn to see Breda again, layer by layer.

The walk starts at 1:30 PM and lasts until around 3:30 PM. You can register until the day itself via the IVN Mark & Donge website under Activities. After registering, you will receive the exact departure point.
