IVN Nature Walk Vuchtpolder, Breda

Anyone currently enjoying the graspepers, lapwings and large pimpernel in the Lage Vuchtpolder can hardly imagine that this area was once a battlefield.
Where the Zwanenbloem now blooms, Spanish soldiers once occupied the positions. During the siege of Breda in 1624/1625, Spinola established his inner line here along the Zwarte Dijk. This was designed to prevent Bredanaars from leaving the city to gather food.

The Spinola’s fortress was part of the outer line that was meant to prevent the States from breaking through to liberate Breda. The polder itself was flooded to obstruct passage. The Hoge and Lage Vuchtpolder have long been a wet, marshy area. Since 1314, peat has been cut or 'gemoerd' here. The names Moerdijkje and the various peat waterways remind us of this period.

Currently, the Lage Vuchtpolder is one of the most valuable wet nature reserves in North Brabant. Much effort has already been made here to ensure clean water, develop new nature, and create an area attractive to wading birds.

This will be a walk that explores Breda’s history, but also focuses on the flora and fauna of this interesting area. The distance is somewhat greater than usual IVN walks, and you will be walking for a longer period.
