IVN Nature Walk Pannenhoef

The nature guides of IVN Mark & Donge out for a walk through a beautiful landscape. In the Pannenhoef, there are many ponds and marshes, but also high, dry sandy soil. The ponds were formed by the excavation of peat in previous centuries.

Information

The peat was dried and transported as fuel over turf canals to Breda. The presence of peat does indicate that there were also ponds or wetlands thousands of years ago. Due to dense plant growth, they silted up and the layer of plant residues turned into peat.

In the 20th century, the area became heavily polluted and acidified, mainly due to over-fertilisation for agriculture and livestock farming. Some ponds were drained for agricultural land, and others drained naturally through excavation for widening and deepening the Bijloop, to promote stronger drainage.

Since the 1990s, Brabants Landschap has successfully worked on restoring natural values. Ponds have been excavated, farmland has been transformed into new nature, and clean water flows through the Bijloop. Many plant and animal species are recovering well. Many waterbirds and wetland birds feel at home here, and in the forests, songbirds, woodpeckers, and birds of prey thrive.

The wetland near the Lokkerven has been made accessible with a 100-metre-long boardwalk.
