IVN Nature Walk Oosterheide
Information
Estate Oosterheide is a former heathland area between Oosterhout and Breda. In the 18th century, up to 30,000 troops were sometimes active here with military exercises. The three small hills that were created served as bullet catchers and remind us of that time.
By the end of the 19th century, it was replanted with woodland. Seventy different tree species were used during planting. It feels just like being in a park. The scattered meadows and fields make Oosterheide an attractive, varied landscape.
Natuurmonumenten has owned this area since 1975 and aims to preserve the estate style and improve the natural values. Shallow ponds and amphibian pools have been excavated. Some fields are used to grow old grain varieties, with associated arable weeds that attract various butterflies and other insects, which is beneficial for the bird population.
Fertilizers and pesticides are never used here. In this wonderful area, you will look for the first plants that display their full glory. It is still early in the year, but some plants are already flowering, such as the purple dead-nettle and lesser celandine. The early flowering plant was not named without reason and sometimes shows its delicate white flowers as early as January.
Join us for a walk and enjoy the beauty of this lovely estate. Registration is possible up to the day of the walk. After registering, you will receive information about the meeting point.
The walk starts at 13:30 and lasts until about 15:30. More information and the registration form can be found on the IVN Mark & Donge website under Activities.
