IVN Nature Walk Bavelse Leij and Sound Wall

Discover nature in Breda on 13 July with a walk through the Bavelse Leij and along the sound barrier.

Information

On Sunday 13 July, the nature guides of IVN Mark & Donge will walk through the stream valley of the Bavelse Leij and alongside the noise barrier next to the A27 motorway.

The Bavelse Leij springs from a marshy spring area near the estate De Grote IJpelaar, where the art academy Sint Joost is now located. This area lies at the transition from sand to clay, with some peat and a few retz mountains. The stream is a total of 5 km long. It flows through the Bavels Broek, formerly a marshy area where the residential district IJpelaar now stands, and meanders its way to the Marks.

The valley is now an attractive nature reserve between the residential neighborhoods. A large part of it has a wooden boardwalk and in certain places crossing points over the stream have been created with stepping stones.

At a noise barrier along the motorway, you might not immediately think of lush vegetation. During this walk, you will be amazed by the sea of flowers between the residential area and the asphalt. The noise barrier is 15 meters high and 1.5 km long. Much of it has been constructed with gabion baskets filled with natural stone from the Ardennes.

The barrier protects the neighbourhood of Nieuw Wolfslaar from the noise of the A27 motorway. Like the noise barrier at Heusdenhout, this barrier has been sown with wildflower mixes. The planting also includes groups of trees and shrubs.

Various insects enjoy the nectar offered by the flowers. Birds nest in the shrubs and happily sing away.  This way, people can live in a place where nature also thrives.

Registration is possible until the day of the walk. After registering, you'll receive information about the departure location.
