IVN Nature Walk Galderse Heide
Information
On Sunday morning, 18 January, the nature guides from IVN Mark & Donge will take you for a walk through forest and heathland. During this walk, you will discover how heathlands – often seen as pure nature – are actually created through human activity. Since the first settlements appeared on sandy soils, heath areas have been formed through activities such as woodcutting, turf cutting, and grazing by sheep.
Higher-lying heathlands were later cultivated into fields, but due to the lack of fertilization, the soil quickly became impoverished. As a result, the heathlands reappeared and were used again as grazing land for sheep.
The Galderse Heide has undergone a major restoration in recent years. The nutrient-rich top layer has been stripped, dried-up bogs have been restored, and a broad strip of coniferous forest has been removed. This creates more space for a diverse range of plants and animals. The heath vegetation is gradually returning, and a flock of sheep helps with management several times a year. A wooden boardwalk has also been constructed through the marshy parts of the area, making the experience even more enjoyable for nature enthusiasts.
Registration is possible until the day of the walk. After signing up, you will receive the exact starting point.
