IVN Family Walk Mushrooms Forest Ranger's Area Dorst
Information
On Sunday 9 November, IVN Mark & Donge is organising two guided autumn walks in the forests near Dorst, in the morning and in the afternoon. This area is known for its great diversity of fungi, with hundreds of species observed over the years.
Mushrooms have been inspiring wonder for centuries. They often appear out of nowhere and disappear just as suddenly. In the past, they were associated with magic, witches, and gnomes. What we see above ground are the fruiting bodies; the actual organism, the mycelium, lives hidden in the soil, leaf litter, or within wood. Sometimes it is visible beneath loose bark.
During the walk, you will learn more about the lifestyle of fungi, their dependence on moisture, soil, and tree species, and the fascinating relationships between species. Some fungi even live as parasites on others, such as the Bolete parasite and various Smuts and Fungal Guts. Eating and being eaten also applies in the world of fungi.
Autumn offers a rich palette of natural phenomena, and regardless of the weather, the guides will make it an engaging and accessible walk. Tip: bring a small mirror to also get a good look at the underside of mushrooms, which is often even more characteristic than the top.
