IVN City Plant Walk Ginneken

Join a discovery walk to city plants during a surprising tour through Ginneken.

Information

On Sunday, 23 November, the nature guides of IVN Mark & Donge will organise a city plant walk between the Mark and the Market. During this walk, you will discover the surprisingly rich and diverse plant growth in the urban environment. In the city, there are often more plant species per square metre than in rural areas. In fact, there is now talk of a dedicated “urban plant district”, alongside well-known areas such as the river, Wadden region, and the Kempen district.

The City Plants Breda working group has been researching spontaneous city flora for over twenty years. In 2013, the book City Plants of Breda was published, which was later reissued nationally under the title Sidewalk Plants. On the website www.stadsplanten.nl, you can find weekly updates on urban flora across the Netherlands.

During the walk in Ginneken, we will observe not only plants in verges, grassy fields, and along the water, but also species that grow on, against, and along walls, in gutters, cracks, sandy corners, and near manholes and poles. Besides common species such as dandelions, daisies, thistles, and street grass, there will also be special plants like the one-day flower, ferns, and dried flowers. Each neighbourhood has its own surprises – what will Ginneken show us?

The walk is accessible for wheelchairs and prams. Registration is possible until the day itself. After registering, you will receive information about the starting location. The walk begins at 13:30 and lasts until approximately 15:30.

More information and the registration form can be found on the IVN Mark & Donge website under the Activities section.
