Information

About the birds
In the Zonzeelse Polder, thousands of geese and ducks winter here, but waders are also common. The large gatherings of birds often attract birds of prey as well.

From the second half of March, you can hear the Eurasian blue tit singing, and in April the singing really starts. According to some, it sings just as beautifully as the nightingale.  One thing is certain: when you hear it, spring is on its way.

About the area
The Staatsbosbeheer manages 100 hectares of grassland and water in this polder. The soil consists of clay and peat. In the area, you can still find peat ponds that remind us of historical peat extraction. The area lies between 1 and 0.5 meters below NAP. Zonzeel received the designation “Wet Nature Pearl” and enjoys extra protection and subsidies from the province.

In 2009, a shallow pond of over 1 hectare was created, new ditches with gently sloping banks were dug, and existing ditches were widened to make the area even more attractive to wading birds and overwintering waterfowl. There are always interesting observations to be made here.

A birdwatching screen has been installed near the large sand pit. Don't forget to bring binoculars! Preferably wear clothing in muted colors and ensure sturdy, waterproof footwear.

Registration is possible until the day of the walk. After registering, you will receive information about the starting point.
