IVN Bird Walk Bleeke Heide
Information
On Sunday morning, 14 December, the naturalists of IVN Mark & Donge will organise a walk along the water, focusing on overwintering birds.
The Bleeke Heide was for centuries wilderness, unusable land for humans, but a paradise for waterfowl and wading birds. In the 19th century, the area was largely drained and forested; around 1900, deforestation and use as meadow and farmland followed. Nevertheless, migratory birds continued to use the area as a wintering site.
In the 1990s, the Bleeke Heide gained the status of a goose and meadow bird area within the National Nature Policy Plan. Since 1999, Staatsbosbeheer has managed the site. Ponds have been re-dug, topographical variations restored, and the water level increased. The result: large groups of ducks, geese and wading birds overwinter there again. They only leave during severe frost.
From a special viewing platform, the birds can be observed undisturbed. This is where the excursion begins, followed – if possible – by a walk along the water.
