IVN Bike Tour Storks around Breda
Information
On Saturday, 2 May, the naturalists from IVN Mark & Donge will cycle around Breda in search of storks nesting.
In the 1960s, the stork was nearly extinct in the Netherlands. Due to the use of pesticides, they found less and less food in the fields. The alarm was sounded, and measures were taken. Special breeding areas for storks were established with marshes and meadows in a water-rich environment.
In addition, nest poles were placed in various locations. It became a success: the number of breeding pairs has only increased over the years. Conservationists are jubilant because the stork is now out of danger. In 2012, a pair of storks settled in the Markdal. This was very special because, until then, no breeding pairs had been observed in the Barony. Since 2017, the birds have also appeared in other places in the region.
By 2025, there were 9 nests and 21 chicks were raised. The Barony has had to manage without storks for centuries, but over 13 years, 108 healthy juveniles flew out. How many breeding pairs can be welcomed this year is guesswork, but with spring approaching, it won't be long before this is known.
To visit as many occupied nests as possible, IVN this time will not go on foot, but cycle. It will be a trip where you pedal approximately 20 km. The guides are happy to show you the way and gladly tell you about these beautiful birds.
In case of a breakdown, IVN relies on its own self-reliance, as the guides have little knowledge of bicycle repairs.
Registration is possible until the day of the bicycle tour. After registering, you will receive information about the departure location.
