The film La Haine depicts a day in the life of three friends – Saïd, Vincent and Hubert – as they try to find their way in the aftermath of massive civil unrest.
In 1993, in a Paris police station, 17-year-old Zaïrese immigrant Makomé M’Bowole, while handcuffed, was shot dead by the police officer conducting the interrogation. Riots broke out all over France.
This true-to-life incident inspired the cinematic molotov cocktail that La Haine became two years later. The film is a sharp indictment of French society and racist police violence.
Written and directed by the then 27-year-old Matthieu Kassovitz, the film celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.
La Haine is a mix of European and American influences – in theme and style. A perfect hybrid of “kitchen sink drama,” a coming-of-age story, and a socially charged thriller, refined with touches of surrealism. All filtered through an impeccable and uncompromising cinematic eye.
