'Het scheve meisje' by Yvon Né at Literature & Music (Nieuwe Veste)

Interspersed with music, Yvon Né talks about her book 'Het scheve meisje', a novel written with captivating sentences and a beautiful choice of words.

Information

In the 1950s, a married life is considered complete only when there are children. So, a child comes, a daughter. But not the girl the parents hoped for, not a child to show off, but one to be ashamed of. Her parents are afraid of the unreachable being that no one seems to need. They do not see how this girl is aware of living in a world for which the instructions are missing.

In Het scheve meisje, Yvon Né finds words for the way a child between 2 and 11 looks, lives, and feels. A child who interprets the things around her in her own way, to make the world manageable, and who is not understood by her environment.
The book is troubling because it shows how differently people who are worlds apart can see reality and how impossible contact and understanding become because of that.
In the parent-child relationship, this perspective is new and frightening. A child who is unreachable for their parents, a child who feels they do not meet their parents' wishes. Heartwarming and touching.
