The role of the sickly composer Gustav von Aschenbach is played by Dirk Bogarde.Thomas Mann (1875–1955) Thomas Mann was a modern writer at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1929, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Throughout his life, he grappled with his hidden homosexuality, a theme he would have liked to explore in his writing but maintained a reserved distance from in his work.Luchino Visconti (1906–1976) Visconti was a screenwriter and director of theatre, film, and opera. After the Second World War, he became a Marxist, which became clearly visible in his films. Later, he broke with neorealism and developed a more stylized, sometimes even baroque, film style. One of the highlights of that period is Death in Venice.
